Types of Fraud:
Romance Fraud
Romance fraud happens when someone creates a fake online relationship to gain a person's trust before asking for money, personal information or financial assistance.
How to protect yourself:
Be cautious of people who declare strong feelings very quickly.
Never send money to someone you have not met in person.
Be wary of requests for financial help or gifts.
Talk to family or friends if you are unsure about a relationship.
Courier Fraud
Courier fraud occurs when criminals pretend to be police officers, bank staff or officials and convince victims to hand over cash, bank cards or valuables to a courier.
How to protect yourself:
Remember that police and banks will never ask you to withdraw money or hand over your bank card.
Never share your PIN or online banking details.
If in doubt, hang up and call the organisation back using a trusted number.
Speak to a friend, family member or trusted person before taking action.
Investment Fraud
Investment fraud involves criminals offering fake or high-risk investment opportunities that promise large returns with little or no risk.
How to protect yourself:
Be suspicious of unsolicited investment offers.
Research companies and individuals before investing.
Be wary of pressure to make quick decisions.
Check that investment firms are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Abuse of Position Fraud
Abuse of position fraud happens when a person in a trusted role uses their position to financially exploit someone, often targeting older or vulnerable individuals.
How to protect yourself:
Be aware of unusual requests involving money or financial decisions.
Regularly review bank statements and financial accounts.
Encourage open conversations about finances with trusted family members or advocates.
Report concerns about financial exploitation as soon as possible.
Rogue Traders
Rogue traders target homeowners by offering unnecessary, poor-quality or overpriced work, often claiming urgent repairs are needed.
How to protect yourself:
Obtain more than one quote before agreeing to work.
Use reputable and trusted traders.
Never feel pressured into making an immediate decision.
Avoid paying large amounts of money upfront.

Suffolk Against Fraud (SAF) is a multi-agency partnership dedicated to preventing fraud, raising awareness, supporting victims, and helping communities become more resilient to fraud and financial exploitation. By working together, we can reduce the harm caused by fraud and safeguard those most at risk.
